Lim Goh Tong was a wealthy Malaysian Chinese businessman and the founder of Genting Highlands. It transforms Genting Highlands from an unknown peak into a most prosperous tourist spot. This project turned out to be the richest person in Malaysia and one of the richest people in the world with a net worth of 4.2 billion US dollars. He was born in 1918 in Anxi Country, Fujian, China and died on October 23, 2007 at Subang Jaya Medical Center. Lim's position as chairman in the Genting Group organization was taken over by his son, Tan Sri Lim Kok Thayon on 31 December 2003. In his book "My Story", he wrote about his life experience and the development of Genting Highland. At the age of 19, he left China and came to Malaysia to work. He first worked as a carpenter for his uncle. He then became a subcontractor and successfully built a two-story school. During Japanese-dominated Malaysia, he worked as a market gardener. Then he worked in the scrap metal and hardware business. Then he got into the second-hand machinery business to increase his wealth. After that, he joined an iron mining company and formed a joint venture. He earns a lot of profit from heavy machinery and invests them in construction and related industries. As a reward for his hard work, he won accolades for construction company Kien Huat Sdn Bhd. Then he successfully built the Ayer Itam Dam and the Kemubu Irrigation Scheme. Finally, he contributes with his energy to the development of Genting Resort. Lim Goh Tong came up with the idea of building a hilltop resort while dining in the Cameron Highlands. This time he was almost 50 years old. He believes a cool, peaceful breeze from the Cameron Highlands will encourage people to head there for recreation and relaxation.
