Publishers carefully review different standards to “ensure that their texts in general can meet as many national standards as possible” (Chapin, 2006, p. 23). Different books usually include different suggestions that can be used in the classroom. The different types of studies help to meet the needs of children and different types of learning styles. Using authentic objects and experiences, students begin to see that social studies is a collective view of the world and relationships. The photos can be analyzed and compared to modern life. “Talk books, observations, real-life experiences, videos, field trips, skits, dramatic re-enactments, simulations and investigations are just some of the many active learning strategies that can promote knowledge and skills” (Chapin, 2006, p. 169). .Multiple IntelligencesIt is possible to use Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences (1983) in the process of planning a social studies unit. Many remember the musical cadence of “Columbus sailed the blue ocean in 1492.” Some people may remember a school play where a cherry tree was cut down. The following methods can be used to assess using multiple intelligences (Herrell, 2004) and can be adapted for social studies content:1. By covering all areas through different methods, students will actively participate in the learning process and will be able to have fun and learn the curriculum as well..
