Essay / Debunking the Myth: America as the Land of Opportunity
For centuries, the belief that America is the land of opportunity has been spread throughout society by wealthy white men. The vast majority of the population has been silenced by oppression. America's history is stained with blood and success is measured by the number of deaths. For some members of society, America may be seen as a land of opportunity, but to succeed, they must climb on the backs of others. The oppression that has existed in society from the 1500s to today represents the glaring errors that exist in the statement "America is the land of opportunity." Beginning with the mistreatment of Native Americans and continuing through oppression and the general practice of slavery, white men established themselves above all others through immoral and selfish practices. In a way, yes; America is the land of opportunity, rich white men can accomplish anything they want with the help of those below them. The reality for the vast majority of Americans is a world of oppression and suffering with no hope of success, which is why America as a whole is not a land of opportunity. Oppression began with a practice of discrimination and harmful beliefs. Prejudicial beliefs are normally considered subconscious traits that manifest based on societal influences, and American society values mass oppression of different races. There is a clear visual difference between the white population and those they oppress. Whites perceived the natives as dirty and uncivilized, which made it easier to commit mass murders against the population without feeling too guilty. The collective mentality was that Native Americans were inferior, undeserving of the land they lived on there... middle of paper ... the injustices inflicted on eleven million people destroyed an entire civilization. The Europeans' only motives were self-improvement, leaving the slave population in ruins, with no hope of success. These two examples clearly show that the claim that America is the land of opportunity is incorrect. There is no opportunity for those who live under oppression, and the scars left by these injustices have not yet disappeared from society. There is still a clear racial divide and superiors who oppress minorities. This manifests itself through police brutality, where “superior” white men repeatedly beat a minority to death. We witness injustice every day and have become blind to the real problems in society. The oppression still hasn't ended, so perhaps even today, America still can't truly be considered the land of opportunity..
