Essay / Comment on How to succeed in business without really...
Does it really take a lot of work to succeed in the job market or can you just use your charm and wit to climb the corporate ladder? This very idea is explored in how to succeed in business without really trying. The play is about starting at the bottom and working your way to the top of a large company without having to do any real work. Based in early 1960s New York, the plot follows J. Pierrepont Finch who starts out as a window cleaner who has a book on how to do business. He eventually got an entry-level job at World Wide Wicketts headquarters, working in their mailroom. He uses a book to help him reach higher positions in the office without really having to try. The play shows his success, his trials, and how the things he does affect the company throughout the play. Although many characters could be the protagonist or even the antagonist of this play, I think the protagonist of How to Succeed… is J. Pierrepont Finch. who is played by Ben Fisher because the situations and setting focus on him and the other characters all connect directly to him in one way or another; on the other hand, the protagonist would try to succeed in the big business without trying. You can see this in the way Finch interacts with the other characters. For example, Finch begins working in the mailroom with Bud Frump played by Zeke Bennett and Twimble played by Anthony Conley-O'Donnell. When Twimble is promoted, he offers his job to Finch who turns to his book to find the answer that leads him to move up the corporate ladder to become a clerk. As Finch grows in the company, his romantic relationship with Rosemary, played by Natasha Gutterud, begins to develop. Yet Finch is still more focused on getting middle of paper because he used charm and just the book to advance in the business. I think young adults and adults who are interested in economics, how businesses work, or even realistic plays would enjoy the production that has been put on. It was simple and sent a clear message. I think people who grew up in the 60s and worked during that era would enjoy this piece. I think they would have a different understanding of it because they grew up in that era and experienced what was happening. In the whole play there is a simple point that I think places J. Pierrepont Finch as the protagonist because everything revolved around him, he had a simple goal and every set or choice he made had a effect on something or someone. While the antagonist rose to high positions in the company because that was the main thing that was at Finch, it is the means to his goal..
