Essay / Does the education system exclude minorities? - 2049
Does the education system exclude minorities?Does the education system exclude minorities on the basis of gender and culture? The United States has become one of the most culturally diverse places. The increase in the number of minorities immigrating to the United States has increased significantly. With this in mind, should policies, laws and institutions, such as education, be restructured and modified to include minorities? Due to their personal experiences, Adrienne Rich, Mike Rose, and bell hooks in The Presence of Others believe that education can be seen as an exclusionary practice (93). The three authors argue that to avoid the exclusion of minorities in schools, changes must be made within the system. Mike Rose argues that institutions should be required to provide immigrants with a stable, common core curriculum. Bell hooks suggest that individuals do not have to conform to the assimilation of the dominant culture to be included in the educational system. Adrienne Rich believes that women need to learn the important things in life themselves, because universities don't teach women everything they need to know. Major changes must be made within the system in order to provide individuals with an exceptional education. In my current job, I met Jessica. Jessica is twelve years old. She was born in Argentina and emigrated to the United States a year ago. Due to the economic and political crisis in Argentina, his family traveled to the land of "opportunity" in search of a better life. As soon as she arrived and enrolled in college, Jessica was placed in “protected” classes. These courses are designed for students who have a language barrier, individuals whose first language is something else... middle of paper ... changes in society. With the vast increase in the number of minorities, the school curriculum should be modified to benefit not only the dominant race but also the minorities. The program must take into account the interests of minorities. Students like Jessica should have the opportunity to receive a challenging and enriching education; an education that does not serve to exclude him.Works CitedHooks, Bell. “Staying close to home: class and education”.
