Lions are the only truly sociable cats and are known to live in groups of up to 40 members. Within a pride are lionesses (females), their offspring and some related lions (males). Social behaviors within a pride differ by gender, as lions are responsible for mating with the lioness and protecting the pride's territory, while females are responsible for herding and hunting in addition to the work of males – protection and defense. Unlike many other females, lionesses exhibit different social behaviors. egalitarianism or equality between them. Their behavior constitutes an advantage because their equality results in equal access to mating with males within the pride. The consequence of this behavior is considered to be a benefit that increases the fitness of the species. A not-so-obvious advantage is that the offspring are then born synchronously. The synchronous arrival of offspring leads to the “crèche” of young which the breeding mothers collectively nurse.
