Essay / The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd - 1428
My house is made of yellow and white limestone. My friend Jane's is bright red brick. If you asked me what the color of one's house means to me... I would say a simple way to identify that house. In my opinion, the color of someone's house is simply no way to detect anything about their personality. It's simply the color of his house. What if I told you that this red was a symbol of love? That the reason it was red brick was because Jane's parents loved each other so much that they decided to express their love in the color of their house just to remind them of the love they share ? It seems a little weird but at the same time it seems extremely normal. The author, Sue Monk Kidd, has shown us very well, by including quotes from other books and through her text, principles that should accompany us throughout our lives. The character development in this book was very good. Within the first few pages, I learned about Lily and her thoughts. Eventually I learned about Rosaleen and the time she pours snuff juice on older white men's shoes when they harass her for voting. At first she didn't seem to really care about Lily, but by the end I saw her as a more maternal figure to her, she seemed to be the type of strong mother, one who fights for her children's rights. When the two finally arrive in Tiburon, they meet in August, June and May. August Boatwright is obviously the eldest of the trio, she holds much of the power in the house and is the one everyone looks up to. By the end of the book, I saw her more as an ever-loving mother. Mrs. June Boatwright automatically feels resentment toward Lily and the two seem to clash in Lily's thoughts. When we finally find out why, you see it's because she's another strong-willed black woman. June would be the kind of mother I could see urging you to stand up to the bully in your class. May, the fun and enterprising woman of the group seems like the nicest woman you've ever met. You wouldn't want to bring up anything that might upset her, because the slightest thing might send her to her Wailing Wall (the wall she made to cry and store her prayers).).
