  • Essay / Civil Unions and Same-Sex Marriages - 642

In this essay I will describe the sociological forces and problems created by same-sex marriage and civil unions in America. Sociological forces are a task that aims to influence or bring about change in an individual or group of people. Two controversial social forces are civil unions and same-sex marriage. First, society commonly declares that marriage is an honorary commitment between men and women to care for each other until death do them part. Today we have same sex marriages all over the United States and in different states in the 50's and 60's it was not allowed and being gay or lesbian was considered to be mentally ill. The current controversy over same-sex marriage, which was once frowned upon, is now embraced and rationalized in society. “Many of the reasons given for opposing same-sex marriage are based on the assumption that gay people have a choice in who they can be attracted to, and the reality is quite different. Many people actually believe that gay people could simply choose to be heterosexual if they wanted to. But the reality is that very few of them have a choice – any more than very few heterosexuals could choose which gender they feel attracted to” (Gay Marriage: The Arguments and Motivations). In the United States, 16 states allow same-sex marriage, with New York and California being the two largest states allowing same-sex marriage. Although most of society accepts same-sex marriage, there are still people who disagree with the law and protest the ban on same-sex marriage. The growth of same sex marriage is such a hypocritical topic because if a person disagrees people are homophobic about it but if you are in favor of the same sex ideal...... middle of paper ...... The more revenue a state has, the more likely the bill supporting same-sex marriage is to pass. Economically, states like Mississippi, South Carolina, and North Carolina cannot afford to pass a bill like this because the state is not generating enough money. I believe that civil union and same-sex marriage outcomes will flourish with increasing societal acceptance. Years ago this wouldn't have been considered, but I think America, more than any other country, is moving in the right direction when it comes to supporting same-sex couples. Jason Collins, a professional basketball player, openly admitted that he was gay and most respected him even more because until him there had been no open homosexuals in the NBA, he became the face of gay culture.
