  • Essay / The Abortion Standoff - 1491

Over the past two decades, people have constantly argued about whether abortion is right or wrong. The question of whether or not a woman has the right to terminate her pregnancy has been the subject of much debate in recent times. But what about men in this situation, should they also have the same right to terminate a pregnancy or does this right belong to women? It is the woman who carries the baby and who must struggle throughout the pregnancy. On the other hand, the man will have to make a lot of sacrifices to raise the child as much as the woman. In the short story “Hills Like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway, this debate is shown first-hand. The American feels trapped, he knows it is the woman's decision and desperately tries to convince her to abort. A majority of men feel the same way as Americans; therefore, men should also have a say when a woman considers having an abortion. Abortion, the termination of pregnancy, has existed since the dawn of man and has appeared in almost every culture. When the procedure is done correctly, it is one of the safest medical procedures available. However, throughout history, many dangerous practices have been used for abortion. There is evidence that indicates that abortions have existed since ancient Egypt. The Ebers Papyrus, an Egyptian medical tablet, shows signs of abortions as early as 1500 BC. The Roman Empire and Ancient Greece also showed evidence of abortions in their time. But none of these ancient civilizations had the same safe abortions we have today. Most countries have developed their own rules and regulations regarding abortion. For example, in the United Kingdom, abortion has been legal since 1967. The Abortion Act of 1967 made it legal for a woman to have an abortion with the assistance of a doctor. and don't leave it to the woman. A man should also be held responsible when he chooses to have an abortion. It should not dictate whether or not one should have an abortion, but simply have a say in the matter. Women and men should have the same choice when choosing an abortion. Works Cited Bachiochi, Erika. "Share." How abortion hurts women. Catholic News Agency, June 6, 2005. Web. March 30, 2014.
