Internet addiction goes by many names: Internet addiction, Internet compulsivity, and Internet use disorder. Whatever it is called, Internet addiction completely controls the addict's life and causes the Internet to become a priority over family and friends. Similar to drug addiction, the Internet provides a feeling of “high,” which addicts become addicted to. Internet addiction is divided into three categories: excessive gaming, sexual preoccupation, and email/texting addiction (Medindia 1). No matter what type of addiction a person falls into, every addict traces their addiction to a fundamental problem in their life. The Internet provides comfort to adolescents because it allows them to create a desirable image of themselves online, allows them to mentally escape their problems, and provides an assortment of entertainment. Teenagers are overdosing on the Internet to escape reality and create an image of how they want to be online. The pressure on teens to maintain a clean, fashionable, and studious appearance is becoming too much of a burden for many teens. In the United States, where independence and unique qualities are emphasized, society has moved away from the simple life of the past and into a trap where adolescents are under constant pressure every day (Examiner 3). When a teenager feels like their best is not the best of anyone else's, or when they are constantly surrounded by all the so-called "popular" people, self-esteem issues increase. Instead of working to resolve their self-esteem issues, they create a different reality for themselves online. In their reality, no one knows them, they control the words or images that are posted, and their existence can focus on anything, from the most superficial to middle of paper......
