  • Essay / Depictions of Family Relationships in Into the Wild

Into the Wild is the story of intelligent, young, and adventurous Chris McCandless, who leaves his family and hometown in his early twenties to explore the wilderness. His story, filled with adventures across the continent (and the frontier at one point), unfortunately ends in his "Great Alaskan Adventure" when he becomes trapped in the Alaskan tundra, eating paralyzing wild potatoes and died on August 18, 1992 from starvation. McCandless had unique beliefs regarding society. Since his death, many people have been inspired by his beliefs and have either gone into nature or distanced themselves from society in some way. In an attempt to clear up any confusion about the hitchhiker found in Alaska, author Jon Krakauer gathered enough information to write a biography about Chris McCandless in 1996. After 10 years, director Sean Penn picked up McCandless' story and made a film about him. which uses the same information collected by Krakauer but with its own twists. Krakauer uses specific evidence to express his belief that Chris McCandless had a neutral relationship with his parents, while Penn misinforms the audience by using McCandless' sister as the narrator to express his belief that Chris McCandless' relationship with his parents was abusive and destructive. Ultimately, the belief that resonates with me most personally is Krakauer's because he uses specific evidence and a reliable narrator who remains neutral throughout most of the story.hJon Krakauer's take on the relationship of McCandless with his parents is that an authoritative parent ultimately cannot keep his child under their influence. Krakauer tells us about Chris McCandless's father in chapter 11. About how "[he] used to take the lead." Take middle of paper......country style for a first world country. My father also wanted me to socialize primarily with people from my own ethnic group or those we knew personally. From the beginning, I knew that this plan would mean that I would have to return to where I came from in very short order and because of this, I did the exact opposite and actually tried to Americanize myself to the point that if I do not declare that I was born and raised in Iran, I will not receive any comments regarding my accent or my behavior. My parents couldn't force me to live the lifestyle they lived for over 40 years and it's this story that helps make Krakauer's portrayal of McCandless resonate more for me than Penn's. Ultimately, I believe Krakauer's take on Chris McCandless's life story was a more accurate portrayal than Penn's and would be one person's ultimate guide to McCandless's life and death. interested in the subject..
