Essay / The Dangers of Playing American Football - 709
Struggling to maintain consciousness and retain my vision after suffering a brutal hit from an opposing player really makes me question the severity of football trauma. How many injuries does it take for it to really matter? For my part, after experiencing concussions, I realized that the positive externalities of football do not compensate for the many negative externalities. Football, as well as any other contact sport, can be very dangerous and potentially threatening to a person's overall health and future. From the long training hours, hot summer workouts and many Friday nights, my personal observation of this dangerous sport is exceptionally widespread. My first experience with the damage caused by football occurred in eighth grade when I saw a senior football player on my team try to eat a phone on the way home after suffering a concussion in the third quarter of the game . This is a great example to make the case that football-related head injuries cause people to “not all be there.” Not only have I seen someone try to eat a phone, but I have also witnessed head injuries resulting in my own friend randomly yelling at me after a game for no reason, and also a friend trying to jump up a whole flight of stairs thinking he was in a movie. There is nothing casual about the rapid, high-intensity contact that accompanies playing football when it plays a role in traumatic brain injury and traumatic brain injury outcomes. The problems and injuries associated with football have been evident from the beginning. and to this day they are still being discovered and researched in the hope of finding solutions so that this sport is not so dangerous. Malcolm Gla...... middle of paper ......o be an important part of life; but it is hoped that many things in football will be changed in order to make the sport safer for everyone. Football may actually be a global fad, but when will people ever realize that the lasting effects football leaves on people is a dangerous thing? Nothing in football will ever compensate for the negative realities that come with playing this dangerous sport. Unfortunately, people don't seem to care about these negative things because the love of football is unconditional. Will football ever be safe? Even though this question may never be answered and football's problems will never be solved, people will continue to love and play the game no matter what. The only hope is that something happens and the excessive injuries, trauma and deaths stop completely..
