  • Essay / Biography of Saint Augustine of Hippo - 642

Saint AugustineSaint Augustine (354-430) better known by Augustine of Hippo was a native of North Africa. Most of his life was spent as a Christian bishop in Hippo Regius, North Africa. This is also where he gained his common name Augustine of Hippo. He was born in a small town named Tagaste (modern Algeria) and lived a moral life as his thoughts on life changed as he grew older. Although he experienced difficult times, throughout his life he was best known for his autobiography (Confessions), his great educational achievements and his spread of Christianity. His mother, Monica, was a Christian, while his father, Patritius, did not like this belief. However, his entire family died in a Christian family. Augustine was raised as a Christian in a family that lived in poverty, but during his early years he did not care much for the Bible and instead showed very sinful behaviors toward the Bible. As a child, Augustine did not like the Bible. He preferred the Manichaeist way of life and therefore participated in it. Manichaeism was a religion mixed with other religions and composed of good and evil. He stole pears from nearby neighbors, not because he needed them, but simply for the thrill of stealing. He hated learning because he had to. Despite his behaviors, Patritius, his father felt that he had great talents in communication and speech. At the age of 16, Patritius sent Augustine to study rhetoric in Carthage, which was the state capital. However, Augustin did not start until he was 17, as his father had to save up to meet expenses. During his time in Carthage, Augustine realized that he was developing a passion for plays. As he understood the plays, he realized that many students were “reversers.” These were studied... middle of paper ... in the United States, his writings are still consulted today because they have great and significant meaning. Augustine's actions are something that someone can take into consideration. His moral lessons, his good education and his belief in Christianity. Moral lessons are what will improve an individual and enable them to make better decisions. A good education would make one feel more complete as an individual and have greater understanding. Staying positive is what will make individuals feel like their lives have more value. Augustine's life was made up of all of this, which is why he is very well known today and his works are appreciated.
