  • Essay / The Excavations and Discovery of Tutankhamun's Tomb

The excavations and discovery of Tutankhamun's Tomb were the result of the efforts of archaeologist Howard Carter and his team. Carter's discovery of the tomb occurred by finding the steps leading to the burial near the entrance to the tomb of Ramses VI. Subsequent excavations of the site by Carter and his team revealed the largest treasure ever discovered in an Egyptian tomb and showed the existence of Tutankhamun. Carter's methodology for the excavation was to keep records for each artifact and ensure that each artifact removed from the tomb was appropriately preserved. The discovery and excavation of the tomb was a long and complex process, but revealed much about Tutankhamun. Carter's discovery of the tomb was made by finding the steps leading to the burial near the entrance to the tomb of Ramesses VI. Carter used the grid technique of dividing the area into rectangles and marking them out one by one. Carter was able to find the grave by finding the top step and twelve more steps leading to a blocked wall that had been plastered over. Carter described what he saw when he opened the wall of the antechamber: "As my eyes grew accustomed to the light, the details of the room slowly emerged from the mist, strange animals, statues and gold - everywhere the shine of gold” describes the types of treasures that were found in the tomb and that the tomb had probably not been robbed. Carter goes on to recount more of what he saw: "I was struck with astonishment, and when Lord Carnarvon, unable to bear the suspense any longer, asked anxiously, 'Can you see anything?' it was all I could do to get out the words "Yes, wonderful things", describes the importance of the tomb's excavation and the large quantity of objects that were found there. .The pr...... middle of article...... http://www.touregypt.net/featurestories/tutexcavation.htm accessed 16/5/14Hurley T, Medcalf P, Murray C, Rolph J, Antiquity 1, Oxford University Press, 2008, pp 91-94.
