    Purpose: This policy was created to inform police officers about the use of force and the restrictions on using it when placed in difficult situations. This policy will also explain how to distinguish lethal from non-lethal weapons and tactics. We want them to use good judgment and caution when apprehending suspects; not only for their own safety, but also for that of others. Section I: Definition of lethal/non-lethal force1). Deadly force is when a police officer kills or seriously injures someone through an action on their part. The examples are below as follows: a). Shoot someoneb). Knocking someone downc) Beating him to deathd) Restriction of air circulation while detaining the suspect.2). Non-lethal force is when a police officer must use a mace, stun gun, baton or their own body to stop and/or arrest. This course of action could have injured a suspect, but did not cause serious injury or death.a). However, if the deaths were caused entirely by stun guns and Tasers and it was a common occurrence, it should be considered fatal. If this is an anomaly, it is not a common occurrence. Police need tools to help them arrest or control suspects who fight them.
