Essay / Rich and Poor Theme in Charles Dickens' Great Expectations. Throughout the novel there are many themes, one of them being rich and poor. This theme is introduced by the description of the context in the first pages. In this novel, the attitudes of the wealthy parents (Uncle Pumblechook) contrast greatly with those of the lower financial class, Joe and Mrs. Joe. Special food is reserved for when wealthier relatives come to our house; it is a motion of respect. Throughout the duration of the novel, Pip searches for wealth and when he finally achieves it, he finds it useless because he considers its source "tainted", his wealth is gained through Magwich. Greed is a big factor. Throughout the novel, there are many connections comparing the rich and the poor, and we have representatives from both sides. Miss Havisham is rich, but lives a life of disorder, disappointment and filth. In contrast to this, Joe is relatively poor but is incredibly comfortable and satisfied with his life, however, his wife, Mrs. Joe, desires more. Magwich becomes rich to help others than himself, that is to say, to make Pip a “gentleman”. Although Joe is poor and comfortable, poverty is not good in itself because Magwich lives in excruciating poverty. Joe Gargery provides and supports his wife and Pip. Joe gave Pip a safe, stable, and reasonably happy home. Pip is considered Joe's apprentice (while working as a blacksmith and at home), he is treated like a son. Joe is a happy medium when it comes to wealth. Before Pip's meeting with Miss Havisham, he is informed of the state of her wealth. There is a huge difference between Miss Havisham's house and Joe's. Miss Havisham's house was a dark, lonely place covered in cobwebs. splendor, for his old father and his “castle”. Herbert Pocket comes across as an incompetent guy; he has vague plans but seems satisfied. Estella's wealth through Miss Havisham and her mercenary attitude immediately lead her down a path of misery and anguish. Pip's journey through life has been reasonably difficult. He came from a working-class background, was given wealth, and became a parasite, which led to many mistakes, revelations, and rejections, and luckily he had the courage to help Magwich escape. Although Pip's journey started out well, it took a turn for the worse once he reached rich status; nevertheless, he still managed to find courage and wisdom, which proves that there is possible hope for the future. This shows that happiness is not always obtained through wealth and that being selfish will not benefit you in the long run..
