    It is disturbing to think that every day some of the most unspeakable murders and killings take place right under the noses of authorities and normal people. The killers responsible for these crimes pose a threat to society and deserve the death penalty. The death penalty is an acceptable and just method of punishment because it serves justice, provides closure for victims' families and increases safety. The death penalty serves justice and is the best option for horrific crimes. In an article on the benefits of the death penalty, Luther Avery states, “The punishment must always fit the crime” (Avery 1). This means that the more serious the crime, the harsher the punishment. The death penalty is the best punishment option because it serves justice. Cruel murders deserve the death penalty. If a murderer received any punishment other than the death penalty, the human life(s) that perished would become less and less important. The death penalty is justified because in the Pledge of Allegiance we affirm “Liberty and Justice for All.” What better way to demonstrate this than to properly punish deserving criminals? (Phil 2)The death penalty has positive effects on the families of murder victims. Losing a loved one to old age or illness is a time of suffering that almost everyone will experience, but losing a loved one because they were brutally murdered is unexpected and much more difficult to overcome. Some family members take years to fully recover from the loss of someone, but the death penalty can help a family work toward a faster recovery (Messerlini 1).
