Essay / Journal Article Focusing on Biblical Interventions Writings in the counseling relationship in an effective manner. In Interventions that Apply Scripture in Psychotherapy, Garzon (2005) attempts to accomplish the following: educate individuals about the different techniques one can use to apply Scripture and to encourage and stimulate God-ordained creativity in the hope to create new techniques and methods for applying God's Word in the counseling relationship.Summary of ReadingsThe beginning of this article focuses on a Christian. A client named George who suffers from feelings of worthlessness, depression, low self-esteem, and suicide. His mother had also struggled with depression and his father had an abusive relationship with alcohol, which caused his father to have violent verbal and physical altercations with George and his mother. The abusive experiences George was exposed to as a child set the stage for post-traumatic stress disorder as an adult (Garzon, 2005). With all of these factors present in this client's life, a treatment plan was created that involved biblical interventions. The author made sure to address the fact that each client is unique in hopes that counselors are aware that one type of scriptural intervention may work for one client and not work for another. The article highlights three guiding values when considering these types of interventions: "respect for the client's autonomy/freedom, sensitivity and empathy toward the client's religious and spiritual beliefs, and flexibility and responsiveness to the client's religious and spiritual beliefs. » (Garzon, 2005). ...... middle of paper ...... every bone in my body; you know exactly how I was born, little by little, how I went from nothing to something. Like an open book, you watched me grow from conception to birth; all the stages of my life were spread out before you, the days of my life all prepared before I had even lived a single day. (The Message) What an astonishing word which shows that our great God took the time to form each of us. This should be a testimony to the value that God believes we have, and that if God can see us as having value, then we should be able to see ourselves as having more value than society teaches us that we we own. This article was very impactful. I hope this will stimulate spiritual growth in my life. God has used many situations like this to speak to my heart and encourage me to draw closer to Him. It's time for me to step in, so God can step in.
