  • Essay / Reflections on Teaching: My Teaching Career

My students didn't study because they didn't know how to study. They nodded blindly when I explained Spanish grammar to them and said they understood, but they didn't even know what part of the grammar confused them on the tests. The students in my reading intervention knew they “couldn’t read” (their words), but they didn’t know why. As a teacher, I had to teach them how to be an effective student before I could expect any investment in their education. Therefore, during my years as a high school teacher, I taught study habits in addition to the curriculum, explained to them how to use their textbooks, and used my tests to assess their levels of skills in order to be able to correct or enrich different learners as needed. As I gave students feedback and they learned my expectations for their growth, they learned to strategically attack.
