  • Essay / Control in Brave New World - 676

A fundamental theme of Brave New World is achieving perfection through deceptive control. Technology, conditioning/predestination, and manufactured happiness are tools of control to achieve what leaders believed to be perfect. The director agrees with me by describing the fertilization process, “the operation undergone voluntarily for the good of society…” (5). Perfection in their minds is manageable conformity without opposition. Ford's control of society is particularly insidious because people don't know they are being controlled and therefore won't fight back. It has become normal. The actions of the leaders and Ford raise a question: “Will this result in the overall perfection of our society?” » The all-powerful Ford has decided to transform a world like ours into a world he considers a utopia. Since Ford's methods are intended to be deceptive and effective, they are often tortuous. Even before babies hatched, technology was already being used to control a better future. Technology: In the hatchery, technology was used for things like the Bokanovsky process (egg budding process) and the Podsnaps process (hatching acceleration) (6 and 8). There were also electrical systems in the bottling room (9). Another process that nicely defines control in a somewhat tortuous way was also achieved with technology: there was a machine that gave different embryos different amounts of oxygen depending on what class they were destined for. Less oxygen would go to the Epsilons and Deltas who were supposed to be the stupidest. They were also put on the verge of death after being given alcohol as part of the Bokanovsky process. All these machines and processes control the development of babies. After the hatchery the babies go to the Con...... middle of paper ......top (54). Another source of happiness would be sex hormone chewing gum, which imitates the pleasure one experiences from making love in Brave New World. The sensations; also creates a feeling of happiness using all your senses. These three main keys to happiness are created by man to control the feelings of citizens. Technology, conditioning, and manufactured happiness are tools of control that form the foundation of Brave New World. The Director says, “It is better that one should suffer than that many should be corrupted” (148). The director explains the motivation to control people and everyone seems to be on board with his deception. In the book, John lashes out because he is against eating soma, he tries to convince the citizens that without the false happiness, they will face reality and spiral out of control.
