Essay / The Legalization of Drugs by Douglas Husak and Peter De...
Marijuana, also known as weed, is a green mixture of dry, shredded leaves and flowers of a hemp plant known as the name Cannabis sativa. Research has shown that marijuana has been around since the 1920s. People use marijuana because of the aftereffects. Studies have shown that marijuana makes you feel good, it increases satisfaction when you smoke, if you are stressed, after smoking marijuana you will be in seventh heaven and the stress will no longer be present. Society has made people smoke more marijuana every day. After interviewing a series of marijuana users, they told me that marijuana was a safe and harmless drug used for meditation. To smoke marijuana, you will use a paper form to roll it up. Although most people can control their alcohol consumption, unfortunately others cannot. Legalizing alcohol was a big mistake, the many tragedies that occur because of alcohol are senseless. The fact that idiots are allowed to drink is even worse. In the article “The Legalization of Drugs” by Douglas Husak and Peter de Marneffe, the two philosophers debate whether or not drug users should be criminalized. Husak advocates for the legalization of drugs. While Marneffe pleads against the legalization of drugs. The article states: “Since alcohol is currently legal, this condition is unlikely to change anytime soon. It is necessary to defend the ban on all drugs against the backdrop of legalized alcohol. Observe, then, that an increase in the use of certain drugs following legalization might actually result in a net decrease in the independent harms of drug and alcohol abuse taken together” (Husak 112). Since alcohol is currently legal, there's a 99.9% chance that won't change anytime soon. Some drugs are banned, but alcohol is still sold in stores. Marijuana is a non-violent drug, while alcohol promotes anger and outright violence. By legalizing marijuana and making alcohol consumption illegal, there is a chance that violence will decrease. The video “Why We Must End the War on Drugs” spoken by Ethan Nadelmann, he addressed both valid points about drugs and whether they should be legalized or stay. Marijuana tempts children as young as 10 to smoke, it rapidly dwindles your brain cells, and can put you at risk of jail time. In the article “Legalize it!” by Douglas N. Husak, he states: “Our supposed concern for the well-being of children seems to disappear as soon as they actually begin using illicit drugs. When a child is caught using drugs, sympathies are pushed aside and pity is rarely offered” (68). Because of their environment, most children become what they see. If they see all the adults smoking marijuana freely around them, of course they will think it's okay to smoke marijuana. They believe that since marijuana remains illegal, it should be impossible for them to smoke it. Once a child smokes illegal drugs, he or she is no longer considered innocent. They will be severely punished for their actions. The novel “High Price” by Dr. Carl Hart tells the personal story of Dr. Hart growing up poor, on drugs, and changing his life to better himself. The text states that "the U.S. Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Statistics examined the links between drugs and crime among prisoners, analyzing data from 1997 to 2004. It
