Essay / Gastric Cancer and Gender, Age and Race - 21774
On the one hand, gastric cancer affects many people. In 2011, an estimated 74,035 people in the United States were diagnosed with gastric cancer (“SEER Stat Fact,” 2013). Additionally, this year, an estimated 22,220 more people will be diagnosed with stomach cancer (“Stomach (gastric cancer),” 2014). Although these numbers do not seem to indicate a big problem in the United States compared to the estimated 233,000 new cases for prostate cancer and the estimated 232,670 new cases for breast cancer, gastric cancer has a significant impact in the whole world, being the cancer with the second highest mortality rate. (“New Targeted Drug,” 2014; “SEER Stat Fact,” 2013). For example, gender can make a significant difference in mortality rates. Gastric cancer is almost twice as likely to kill men as women. Between 2006 and 2010, gastric cancer accounted for 4.9 deaths per 10,000 among men, while it accounted for only 2.5 deaths per 10,000 among women (SEER Stat Fact, 2013). Besides gender, race also plays a role in increasing the risk of developing gastric cancer. People of African and Asian descent are more likely to get cancer than any other ethnic group (“Stomach Cancer,” 2012). Compared to the average of 10.3 cases of gastric cancer per 100,000 people, black men have a ratio of 15.3 cases per 100,000 people while Asian men have a ratio of 14.9 cases per 100,000 people. Similarly, while women on average have a ratio of 5.3 new cases per 100,000 people, African women have a ratio of 8.5 cases per 100,000 people and Asian women have a ratio of 9.0 cases. per 100,000 people. Another trait common to many victims is old age. Older people are more susceptible to gastric cancer than younger people a...... middle of paper ......7). Cancer patients are advised to exercise.
