Essay / The Phenomenon of Youth Language Americanization
IntroductionThis project is not only interested in the phenomenon of youth language Americanization in Ireland and the extent to which youth language has adopted variants of American English, but also to the influences and reasons which explain this evolution. It seeks to examine and provide answers to the various questions surrounding the increasing prevalence of American English in the Irish context by examining sociolinguistic issues such as overcorrection, distinctions in accent, vocabulary and grammar, characteristics of youth language in general, language variation and change, as well as concepts of performativity and belonging to peer groups. It also aims to determine the specific features of American English that Irish adolescents attempt to imitate by exploring aspects of the phonetic and phonological composition of American English and examining the results of a survey I conducted on the subject. This essay and its conclusions are subject to certain limitations and delimitations that should be taken into account when thinking about its contents, one possible limitation being the fact that an individual's background is an important factor in how that individual performs.
