If you could write a book set thirty years in the future, how would you do it? Well, Ray Bradbury describes how he sees humanity in the future with his bestselling novel: The Martian Chronicles. This novel was first published in the 1950s, meaning the story took place almost 50 years in the future. I was able to read the updated version which was published in 1997, so the stories I read take place approximately 33 years in the future. The Martian Chronicles is a novel filled with many interconnected short stories and chapters. These stories tell of the colonizations of Mars by people fleeing planet Earth. Earth is described as an unstable planet with nuclear meltdowns and huge areas of radiation due to nuclear war. This causes humans to take over a new planet, which in this case is Mars. Bradbury originally published science fiction mini-stories in the 1940s. This story was then assembled with additional material to create this sensational novel. Bradbury sets the novel in a time far removed from the present so that it can use ideas of new technologies such as rockets, Mars landings, and many other advanced technologies that were just ideas in the 1950s. Yet it is quite strange that he did not set the time far enough if we still did not understand some of the current pressing problems of world civilization: nuclear war. In this essay I will talk about the physical setting that Ray Bradbury created and how he was able to fit it into the story and depict it as best as he could. I will talk about how the setting relates to the author. I will also talk about the main locations of the novel and the realism of their locations. Finally, I will discuss how the main characters fit into the main setting...... middle of paper......strophic and fail in the end. The Martians try to adapt by also killing humans or using their telepathic power to pass themselves off as humans. They had the power to create visions or dreams in the minds of humans and pass themselves off as one of them. This is how many Martians were able to survive. In conclusion, this is actually one of my favorite books at the moment. It's full of futuristic events and creativity. The author did a great job describing every event and detail. This gives you a beautiful picture of this fictional world which he explains very carefully. This is a high quality work written by very skilled authors. I highly recommend it, especially if you're a big fan of futuristic fiction and if you're the type of person who believes there is life on other planets. The setting is very well written and described leaving you with an excellent reading experience.
