Essay / Comparison of “David and Goliath” and The Basketball...
The stories of “David and Goliath” and “The Basketball Underdog” are similar and different in many ways. These stories are both in the same book David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell. Gladwell's book is about the underdogs, the misfits, and the advantages of these people. Both of these stories have an underlying theme of the advantages of being an underdog. The stories “David and Goliath” and “The Basketball Underdog” have many similarities and differences between them. “David and Goliath” is the biblical story of an underdog overcoming obstacles and winning. A long time ago, the Israelites and the Philistines fought. Instead of having one big war – all the Israelites against the Philistines – each side chose their strongest, greatest, and best person to fight against each other. Once both sides have chosen their candidate, they will fight to the death to find out who is truly the best. The Philistines chose Goliath. Goliath was a tall, strong, muscular giant who spent his entire life fighting. We really expected Goliath to win. Once the Israelites learned that the Philistines had chosen Goliath, they were very worried. They didn't know who to choose, until a normal man named David volunteered to fight Goliath in battle. David was weak, thin and inexperienced in combat. David and all the Israelites knew that if David simply tried to fight Goliath, he would definitely lose. When it came time to fight, David took out a slingshot he had made and shot a stone into Goliath's forehead before he could even get close to David. After this shot, Goliath was dead; and the Israelites won. This story is very similar, ...... middle of paper ...... a lot in common, but they are also very different. For example, "David and Goliath" is a world-changing and very important Bible story, but "The Basketball Underdog" is just a fun little "Cinderella story" of no great importance. These stories have very different importance. Additionally, “David and Goliath” is a story that only involves one battle. David made the slingshot once and shot Goliath, then it was over. But “The Basketball Underdog” is a constant battle, over and over again, from their first practice to the national championships. Overall, “David and Goliath” and “The Basketball Underdog” have a lot in common, and also a lot of differences. These are both inspiring and entertaining stories, and I would recommend them to anyone.
