The Crimes of Crime and PunishmentOur topic for this article is Crime and Punishment, by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. There are several different issues regarding this. We have chosen three main points to cover: the crimes, the people who solved them, and the different types of punishments. These are the topics we have chosen for our report. In the 19th century, crime was rampant throughout London. But because of poverty and disease on the streets, crime was the only way to survive. Most crimes committed in London were crimes involving theft. Pickpocket gangs and street gamblers were commonplace on London's main streets. Prostitution was also an important source of income on the streets for both girls and boys. But crimes committed against the middle class and the wealthy were mostly property and conflict crimes which accounted for 90% of all crimes committed by the upper class. In Victorian England and today, there are two categories of crime. “Indictable”, which is equivalent to our felony crimes which constitute all major crimes. These crimes include: murder, armed robbery, burglary, theft, rape and assault on police. The next category is called “summer” crimes which are equal to our misdemeanor crimes. Summer crimes were all minor offenses such as: property crimes, vagrancy, drunkenness, prostitution, petty theft and all other minor crimes. Probably the most famous criminal of the Victorian period was "Jack the Ripper". Jack the Ripper was "the first modern sexual serial killer" (Sugden, p. 2). Jack's trademark was the murder of prostitutes. But not only did he kill them, he surgically removed the organs and entrails and placed them near the corpse. "Jack the Ripper" wasn't his only nickname, he was also nicknamed "the Whitechaple Murder" because the bodies were found near Whitechapel Road, and "The Leather Apron" because of a man who went around and beat up the prostitutes. without reason. Jack the Ripper is credited with 9 murders, but police believe he may be responsible for others. All the murders piled up in one square mile. Jack is described as carrying a long knife in which he cut his victims open, and a black Gladstone bag whose contents are unknown..
