Growing in New York City's African-American and Latino ghettos, untrained individuals brought the dance to the streets. This "street dance" quickly became popular in the early 1970s. Hip-hop style dancing was "meant to be popular in the original sense of the word, meaning it was for the people, not the academy”. At that time, this style of street dancing was not called hip hop until a certain DJ put hip hop on the “map”. Kool DJ Herc was the first DJ to create a unique genre of music that complemented his new style of street dancing. At his local parties he would give these break and pop dancers the opportunity to perform their dances which matched so perfectly with the hidden music. On the East Coast, some of the developing dance styles included uprock and break. There were also B boys on the West Coast who were also inventing and developing their interpretations of hip hop dance. These included popping, locking, robot and boogaloo, otherwise known as funk styles. In the 1970s, dance teams began to come together and perform these innovative new dances. The Electric Boogaloos, The Lockers and The Rock Steady Crew are the three groups that influenced hip hop by spreading new hip hop dance styles as a result.
