  • Essay / Building a School: Bad Decision - 1135

Building a School: Bad DecisionMy only “normal” year of high school was my junior year. I don't know if any part of high school is normal, but the last three years have been miserable for me. These years were full of construction. Greeneville High School was built in 1950 and was in serious need of help. The city had to make a decision on what it wanted. They weren't sure whether to build a whole new school in a new location or renovate and expand where it is. They chose to rebuild and expand. This meant that in my later years there would be a major headache. I'm not saying the decision to leave the school in its current location was a bad decision, but I don't think anyone really considered the problems it would cause. At the start of the first year, the school system sent out surveys asking parents what they thought of the school renovation. Everyone in my town knew something had to be done years ago. I was surprised the building hadn't already collapsed. You were sitting in class and looking outside through the cracks in the walls. Most of the town wanted to build a new school on a new site. This would help alleviate overcrowding and parking conditions. They could easily build elsewhere if necessary. This dream was shattered when it was announced that the school would remain where it is. What happened? The two men who were going to invest money in the new school had to decide where the school would go. (The men are not named so that no one would be offended who might know them.) They were afraid that if the school moved from its existing site, downtown would lose money. These two men had to decide everything without considering the repercussions. So with this decision, my high school years were forever changed.
