I began to fall asleep, exhausted and overwhelmed by the events of the day. I wonder again and again if I made the right decision in coming to work here. I was startled awake by what seemed to be a loud alarm. Apparently our alarm sounded like an air raid siren. I got up and felt horrible. I didn't even feel like I was sleeping. We got dressed and went to the cafeteria to have breakfast and start another busy and hectic day. Now years have passed. Scientists have finally discovered a cure for the dreaded tuberculosis, and now the doors to Waverly Hills Hospital are closing. So many patients died in this hospital. Many walked through the hospital doors with their families and exited one by one through the body chute. Many staff members left the same way. Doctors and nurses who gave their lives to help others
