Torture Against Human RightsIain Banks once said about torture: “Torture is such a slippery slope; The moment you allow a society or a legal system to do that, you almost instantly get a situation where people are tortured for very trivial reasons” (Goodreads). When used appropriately, torture can be very effective; however, it is often taken advantage of and it is never acceptable. This has shown in the past that once a country is accused of using torture, all credibility is lost and it is understandably despised. Torture is an extreme violation of human rights. Torture was introduced by the early Romans dating back to 530 AD. It was generally mainly used against criminals and slaves. Even if they were hesitant to resort to torture, that does not at all mean that they took it lightly. Very violent forms of torture were used on criminals (Pennington). They adapted the method of torture to the crime committed. If the crime was serious enough, the tortured criminal was never released, simply tortured to death. There are two very common forms of torture used to inflict serious punishment. One of them was coffin torture. This was a good example of crime-dependent torture. The victim was placed in a device called The Coffin and restrained so that she could not move any part of her body. The crime they committed determined the time they spent there. For serious crimes, such as blasphemy, the victim was left there until death. The cause of their death was usually heat exhaustion, but they were also tormented by hunger and by animals chewing their flesh. Violating a person's rights and treating them as less than a human being is never acceptable.
