  • Essay / Challenging behaviors in people learning...

This task will focus on a group of service users, particularly adults. It will explain challenging behaviors in people with learning disabilities through a psychological perspective which is behaviorism, and finally discuss how a social worker could approach the problem by applying a psychological intervention or approach which will be a modification of behavior. Valuing People (2001) recognizes that learning disability can limit a person's daily functions, which can result in a lower status within the society in which they live, thereby producing social exclusion. Communication can be difficult for people with learning disabilities, as their difficulties can include speech difficulties, problems with non-verbal communication and impact on their social interaction (Genders et al 2002). Adopting a social model, Oliver (1996) stated that “disability, according to the social model, is anything that imposes restrictions on disabled people” (p. 33). One psychological perspective that provides some insight is behaviorism, which was established by BF. Skinner (1976). Behaviorism is based on the idea that a person's behavior is shaped by their experiences and can be changed by learning new behaviors. Norman and Redfern (1997) define behavior as the actions and activities of the individual that are shaped by the environment, place, time, people and objects present in the activities. They then suggest that behaviorism is a philosophy of mind based on assumptions about human nature. This perspective focuses on behavior and its consequences that can be characterized by positive reinforcements (Norman and Redfern, 1997). Behaviorism is a learning theory that suggests that all behaviors are obtained as a result of conditioning...... middle of article ......intermediate environment. The worker must ensure that the priorities and best interests of the service users are taken into account by creating a relationship of trust (Norman and Redfern, 1997). In conclusion, from a behaviorist perspective, pleasant experiences are positive reinforcements and unpleasant experiences are negative reinforcements. that influence a person's behavior. Changing the behavior of people with learning disabilities helps services manage some service users who present major challenges to services. However, it is necessary to recognize the role of Campling (2006): “Social workers must be able to help individuals access services that will enable them to maintain their independence and choices in their own lives” (p. 115 ). To this end, behavior modification is an understanding of behaviorism that can be a useful tool for social work to use..
