In The Inferno, Dante goes to Hell to find redemption for his sins because he chose to live a less virtuous life. His journey to hell is intended to help him overcome his sins and discover the love of God. Dante represents the everyday sinner, and Hell is a poem that gives the reader hope for redemption while describing what happens when redemption is not achieved, the wrath of God's perfect justice . Dante's visit to Hell aims to better understand the difference between sins on Earth and the punishment for sins in Hell, or contrapasso. In order for Dante to escape the contrapasso, he must go through hell and see God's punishment for every sin and truly repent to avoid the fate of sinners. The eighth circle of Hell contains those who are fraudulent, including but not limited to: flatterers, hypocrites, and thieves. The ninth and final circle of Hell is that of betrayal. Betrayal of family, country, guests and, worst of all, benefactors. After Dante travels the circles of Hell and understands the punishment for different types of sin, he wants to live a more virtuous life and repent in order to go to Heaven. The contrapasso or perfect justice of God is used to allow offenders to relive their sins that they chose rather than serving God. Dante relates to the reader because he too chose sin over God, but finds redemption as the poem suggests, the reader can too. Hell is a message to readers about God's punishment of sinners and that redemption can be achieved if they repent..
