Essay / Deviance Labeling Theory Essay - 965
Despite this idea, in Boswell and Spade's article, Fraternities and Collegiate Rape Culture, they examine rape on college campuses. In their studies, they examined the behavior of men and women to determine the setting of fraternity parties (high-risk fraternities versus low-risk houses) in which rapes occur on college campuses. They found that context plays a role in rape culture for heterosexual relationships on college campuses as well as behavior. That is, factors such as context can promote deviant behavior like rape. In Nack's article, Identity and Stigma of Women with STDs, however, she explains that women, particularly college students, are stigmatized and labeled when they suffer from a sexually transmitted disease. Women with STDs had broken society's norms and were therefore considered deviant. Nack explores how women with STDs carry out their act of deviance and states that the first step is to deny this deviant identity. Then they blame the person they think gave them the money and eventually they realize that they have to accept it and tell their friends, family and friends.
