Essay / Transgender Issues - 1450
Every day, gay and lesbian issues are becoming more widely known and making more progress every year. With them we learn about bisexuals, pansexuals, asexuals and any other sexuality that is not defended as heterosexual. However, a certain cause is closely related to this, but is not making as much progress or being heard as much, the issue of transgender people. Even though the well-known LGBTA activist organization involves transgender people, their voice in the movement is rather small and little heard. However, the organization GATE - Global Action for Trans* Equality aims to change that and raise awareness and voices about transgender people in hopes of uniting the many groups who want the same thing. They hope to one day make the world safer for transgender people. This article is going to cover what being transgender really is, the history of this group and the groups that oppose it and where this group seems to be heading. Children are taught that there are two genders, boy and girl; later we learn that these genders are present in our genitals, also called our penis. However, very few children learn about "the boy who was born in the wrong body" or "the girl who feels like a boy." These cases concern individuals classified as transgender. Transgender can be defined as a person whose mental sex does not match the sex they were assigned at birth. It can also be explained as someone who "does not conform unambiguously to conventional notions of masculine or feminine gender." (Oxford Dictionary) People experiencing this problem may suffer from body dimorphic disorder, or BDD. In which the individual worries about how the world perceives them because they do not fit the media position of a boy or a girl. This mess... middle of paper ... denounces the murder and abuse that trans people face, and actually encourages such things with signs that say "pray for the dead soldiers" and "thank goodness for the dead soldiers." referring to the new policy allowing LGTBA individuals to enter the military. Organizations like GATE, LGTBA, and The Center are needed because of organizations like GodHateFags. Organizations like GATE help improve the lives of all trans people, making the world a safer and more welcoming place for them. As the years go by, they hope that identifying as transgender or non-specific will become more normal and lead to less hatred and abuse. That one day they will be able to live in a tolerant world, without the fear that comes with identifying as such. Because of groups like this, groups like GodHatesFags will have fewer voices in the community. Hopefully one day groups like this will cease to exist.
