Atsumori is a Nō drama written by Zeami while Nonomiya is said to have been written by Komparu Zenchiku. Even though these two dramas were written by different people, they both incorporate past literary sources as their basis. Nō dramas are generally influenced by past literary works such as Genji Monogatari, Ise Monogatari, and Kokinshū. These two Noh plays are mainly based on Heike monogatari and Genji monogatari. The drama Atsumori Nō is based on Heike Monogatari and the story of Atsumori of the Taira clan who was killed by Kumagai of the Minamoto clan. Like many other Noh plays, this one focuses on Buddhism and how a spirit needs help to move forward. This is usually accomplished by reciting the Lotus Sutra and praying. There are also important psychological aspects, such as the fact that fighting achieves nothing and the importance of forgiveness and prayers. The importance of the play is that it adds more to the original story, including religion and remorse. This gives a deeper insight into some of the characters in the tale.
