Derek takes Danny to school the next morning and explains that they might be in danger because of the decision they made, which hurt a few of their former gang members that night. So Derek drops Danny off at school. In the Contemporary Justice Review article they explain the ending of the film as follows: "Danny, newly reformed and carefree, shot dead in the bathroom by the clack boy he had blown smoke at earlier in the film." We hear him say, ‘Hate is baggage – it’s not worth it’” (Finley 229). This last quote that Danny says shows how he and Derek have changed over the course of the film. They both learned in different ways that “hate is baggage and not worth it.” Although Derek was extremely upset by his brother's death, it's safe to say that he was, to say the least, proud to have died not out of hatred but as a new person. Just like how the old Derek left and came back as a new one
