Daniel RiojasMrs. FisherEnglish 2 Pre-AP, 3rd periodFebruary 9, 2014Always Listening“There are approximately 3 billion telephone calls made every day in the United States” (Romano). Now imagine that you are calling your friend on the phone. Sometimes we can take a small privilege like this for granted. Now imagine that the government listens to our every telephone conversation. Why wouldn't that scare you? I know it terrifies me. Wiretapping is a problem that affects every person in the country. But it's not just about wiretapping; through a program called Prism, the NSA gained direct access to the systems of Google, Facebook, Apple and other American Internet giants (Glenn). Everything we search on Google, every message sent or received on Facebook, every item purchased on Apple is seen by the NSA. The government is abusing its power to spy on its citizens and it must stop. Doing my research, I was almost convinced of the other side of the argument, but there was one thing stopping me, ...... middle of paper ......ment and have an embarrassing secret they want to keep secret. We have to find a compromise through all this spying. Both relevant groups must be involved. In compromise, not only must the government be satisfied with the deal, but privacy advocates must also be satisfied. I don't want to live in a world where freedom is a figment of my imagination, an idea that can never be realized, only attempted. I believe that as long as this spying continues, there will truly be no freedom. I believe that a balance of power between these two main groups will force each other to keep the other honest. However, right now I am very afraid that government officials are abusing the power they have so graciously granted themselves. However, I believe that a compromise can and will be made in the future.
