Hypermagnesemia and HypomagnesemiaMagnesium is an important element necessary for healthy bones and teeth. Using all muscles and nerves converts it into energy for daily life. It also helps maintain adequate levels of calcium in the blood. Having a therapeutic level of magnesium helps prevent cardiovascular disease and reduces the risk of bone loss. The adult human body contains approximately 2,000 mEq of Mg. Half of this amount remains in the skeleton and the other half in the soft tissues (Wacker and Parisi 1968). The normal concentration in the blood is between 1.7 and 2.3 mg/dL (Magnesium, 2013). Causes of HypomagnesiumHypomagnesemia is defined as a level less than or equal to 1.5 mg/dl (Mag Analysis, (2013). Often an overall decrease in calorie and food intake can lead to a drop in magnesium. If a patient is starving, this process causes magnesium levels to drop.
