Opinions on the opposing race between Asian and Western civilizations generally fell into three categories: resource-dependent, imperialist, and hostile and openly racist. Most interactions started in one of these three categories, but ultimately ended in some form of combination of all three. These interactions ultimately shifted Asian views of the West from superficial to anti-Western and attempted to push negative influences out of the East. Western empires first became interested in Asian countries – India, China and Malaysia, for example – for their diverse resources. that they could supply and the larger markets that were maintained within countries. This has created a cycle of dependence: Asian countries depend on European manufactured goods and the services they provide, schools and roads, and Europeans on valuable resources they have gained from their interaction with the Eastern world.
