The black and white Victor Harplin film, White Zombie, and the WB Seabrook short story, "Dead Men Working in the Cane Fields", both were produced in the early 20th century and were among the first works to capture the nature of the zombie. The zombie being a unique monster, it finds its origin in the folkloric and ritual practices of the New World, more precisely of the Republic of Haiti (The Sub-Subaltern Monster). They both focus on zombies, but differ in how they are depicted. Both took place in Haiti, where the zombie originated. Also at this time, the United States occupied Haiti and American companies set up shop on the island. America was also going through serious social changes at this time. Women and African Americans were trying to gain more rights. Women also behaved more provocatively and did things that would have been considered inappropriate at the time. The social mold was shattering. America was in a boom period with big business and new technological innovations. The story and the film are also closely related to Cohen's first thesis. These two literary works have similarities and differences, but both tend to play on the social and political differences of the 1920s and 1930s. White Zombie and "Dead Men Walking in the Cane Fields" represent early zombies and both embody Cohen's work. first thesis “The monster is a cultural body”. Both the story and the movie have zombies and both of these works have their scary zombies appear with dead-like features, but the real reason they are scary is because at the time they tried to change the society and it scared people. People who liked society the way it was didn't want another group to take power or right...... middle of paper ...... short story takes place in Haiti and little around the same time, however they proposed it. two different descriptions of the same place. In the story, we get the feeling that Haiti is not a place we want to be. American companies came to the island and there were these dead creatures working in the sugar cane fields. This looks like a scarier place unlike the movie. In the film, Haiti appears less gloomy. The couple goes to Haiti to get married. It is considered an exotic getaway. White Zombie and "Dead Men Working in the Cane Fields" are two works that depict the zombie as a mindless creature, but they both have different reasons why the zombies are there. Both of these works contained social and political references to the period in which they were made. Both works were meant to scare people, but they did so by playing on different fears..
