Essay / What are the negative effects of Obamacare - 1280
This proves that trying to raise taxes on one group of people and not raising them on another group is a difficult thing to accomplish. John Kartch, a reporter for American's for Tax Reforms, wrote an article about taxes introduced after the implementation of Obamacare. “…among the 20 new or higher taxes in Obamacare, at least seven directly hit families earning less than $250,000 a year” (Paragraph 1). One of the things Obamacare was trying to avoid was imposing higher taxes on the middle class, and instead of preventing that, higher taxes hit the middle class directly in the face. This angered the middle class, as they had been promised not to raise taxes, and once again made Obama and Obamacare look bad. Author Marcia Angell of Harvard Medical School believes there is only one way to cover the entire country under Obamacare. “The only way to provide health care to all Americans at an affordable cost is to institute some form of public, not-for-profit system…” (2). By “public nonprofit system,” she means a system that provides universal health care at half price, like Medicare, which is a single-payer system. In 2009, Obama confirmed what Marcia Angell had said and said that the only way to cover everyone in the country with health insurance was to have a single-payer system, but he took no action in this meaning. The only way for Obama to accomplish what he aims for is to follow his own words and create a single-payer plan. Otherwise, Obamacare will continue to struggle and may never be successful.
