  • Essay / Antigone Tragic Hero Essay - 1037

Antigone has lost everyone except one sister. His brother Polyneices rots on the battlefield. Poyneices is believed to be a traitor while his other deceased brother was buried as a hero. Antigone is the tragic hero par excellence. She is already cursed by her royal lineage, which is not her fault. Antigone is not going to stand by and let her brother's body be disrespected. Antigone's pride in her family is what led to her downfall. She doesn't take no for an answer, even against King Kreon. Antigone ends up sacrificing everything, even her life, because she is stubborn. She lets her pride and self-confidence override rational thinking. She had no means of preserving her life. The reader feels that Antigone did the right thing. She is sentenced to death and commits suicide because she does not want to give Kreon any satisfaction. She ended her life on her own terms, not Kreon's. King Creon lost everything that gave meaning to his life. Kreon ends up with nothing because he wanted to be provocative, and he wanted what he wanted, no matter the circumstances.
