The Rwandan genocide took place in 1994 and in the space of 100 days, approximately 800,000 Tutsis and “Tutsi sympathizers” were massacred by Hutu militias and Hutu civilians. (History of Rwanda, 2010) The conflict in Rwanda began a long time ago, and many aspects of human geography and some models of physical geography have affected the problem. The genocide not only affected Rwanda, but it also had repercussions on many neighboring countries as well as the rest of the world. The results of the genocide are still clearly visible today, sixteen years later. The Rwandan genocide was a meticulously planned attempt by the Hutu to erase the Tutsi from the earth, and was effective due to exclusive planning and the inability of the UN Security Council to do anything. Action must be taken. to ensure this never happens again.Defining the problemGenocide is defined by the United Nations Convention as "acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group" . (Spalding, p. 2) This is exactly what happened in Rwanda between the Hutus and the Tutsis. Hutus made up about 90% of Rwanda's population and are generally darker and stockier than Tutsis. The Tutsis made up about 10% and were thinner and their skin was a little lighter. Although there are some minor differences in their appearance, "Hutus and Tutsis cannot strictly be defined as two ethnic groups because they spoke the same language, respected the same traditions and taboos." (Destexhe, 1995) This essentially means that they lived together, in the same way, and that they were still somewhat the same.
