Every year, thousands of students embark on an exhausting journey to find a medical school that is right for them. Around 5,000 students will have the courage to apply to one of the most prestigious medical universities in the world, Harvard Medical School. Founded on September 19, 1782, Harvard Medical School was first established in Cambridge, Massachusetts, but now resides in Boston, Massachusetts. Located in the Longwood Medical Area, Harvard Medical School neighbors the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as well as Massachusetts General Hospital (“Harvard Medical School”). East Coast schools are known for having the highest standards for incoming students. Harvard Medical School is no different. MCAT scores average 35.13 and average GPA is 3.8. Despite a strong tendency to select only the best students, the class remains diverse. Of the 165 students who apply, 80 are women and 85 are men (“Harvard Medical School”). Harvard Medical School shows no preference for students residing in the state. Students come from 32 different states. Students average 23 years old, but range from 21 to early 40s. HMS also requires that students enter with 1 year of biology, 2 years of chemistry, 1 year of physics, 1 year of calculus, and 1 year of expository writing ("Harvard Medical School"). They also require life experience in the medical field, which includes research. A student who has completed these desired requirements is in excellent shape to apply to Harvard Medical School. Harvard sets the deadline for applying to AMCAS as November 1 of each year. Of the 5,138 applicants, 800 to 1,000 students will be lucky enough to receive an interview invitation.
