Humans can destroy, mutilate or ransack caves. Humans affect the cave indirectly by touching the walls, which causes discoloration and prevents the cave from growing. Humans tend to litter, which is not allowed. The caves are locked outside opening hours so no one vandalizes them. Efforts to restore the caves to the way they were before human impact include plugging artificial entrances with doors to restore humidity. The Payson Outdoor Club began in 1921. The club is dedicated to protecting and preserving caves from vandalism. These efforts, combined with laws, will help prevent further human impacts on the planet.
