I chose to interview Regina Geis, who serves in the administrative role of Acting Supervisor of the County Mental Health Adult Day Program, which provides services to individuals with intellectual disability. Ms. Geis has held this position for 15 months. This is his first management position within a human services agency. His management style has changed during this short period. She feels she is now more direct in her directions to staff. She said: “Maybe now I seem a little cold. But I have learned that I must now use as few words as possible to get my point across. Geis believes that to be an effective leader, one must demonstrate a high level of confidence: "even if I am unsure of myself, I must be willing to stand by my decision and implement it." However, she also said that a competent supervisor must also be able to accept that they are wrong. Ms. Geis supervises 15 direct caregivers in the programs and notes that "that's a lot of different views and perspectives to sort through." Therefore, she finds it not easy to work with difficult people. From an administrative role, she says, “You can’t let this consume you and affect you negatively. » Ms. Geis believes that to be an effective manager when working with complex people, you must learn to use their strengths and adapt the work environment. “You find what they're really good at and put them in the best role that uses their strengths.” At first, Ms. Geis sat quietly during entire management team meetings, but now she has more confidence in her abilities, position and will speak up. “Now I give my opinion or raise questions to ask.
