  • Essay / The Boll Weevil Plague - 1026

On an endless road of meadows and half-collapsed barns lies a picturesque town that lives up to its motto "the city of progress." Enterprise, Alabama, is wedged between miles of dark pastures and feeding cows, but the peanut factory overwhelms every breath. Monotonous driving has its reward, and it's only found hidden in a valley of small shops and Baptist churches on the main street downtown. This is a statue that recalls the story of this city's triumph over its struggling economy during the decline of cotton. Carved in stone, a woman displays a boll weevil in honor of her efforts to destroy the Enterprise cotton crop, Alabama's primary economic source. The boll weevil. It is a common name given to an insect that infests cotton plants. When mature, they tend to be "reddish-brown, gray, or almost black in color and normally less than 0.24 inches long" ("What is a boll weevil?"). Its muzzle extends from its face with two fork-shaped spurs that extend further. boll weevils hibernate in grass in the fall and do not reappear until spring (“What is a boll weevil?”). This small, beetle-like insect has destroyed southern economies, such as Enterprise, Alabama. The boll weevil's main food source is cotton plants, a crop that covered southern plantations at the time. In the spring, when they emerge from hibernation, they puncture the cotton swabs and lay their eggs inside (“What is a boll weevil?”). After about four days, the larvae are born. This is where most of the damage occurs. The larvae eat and destroy cotton fibers (“What is a boll weevil?”). The plant is infested by these insects; they eat them until the cotton plant eventually dies. Boll weevil season allows man... middle of paper ... to feel like he did really well and worked really hard on his paper. The journal contained a bit more sarcasm than I had originally intended, but it was unavoidable given my topic. I had no problem writing this and really enjoyed it.Works CitedChick, Weevil. “The wonderland of weevils.” : The daily show. Internet. April 26, 2014."What is a boll weevil?" What is a boll weevil?.
