Welfare is the most common method for poor citizens in the United States. It provides cash assistance to low-income families with children, primarily raised by a single mother. This happened in the 1990s. Welfare reform had very positive effects on people's lives. The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program and the Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) program were founded in 1996 (Cozic 47). This exceptional reform imposed work requirements on the programs. These requirements were imposed on large numbers of people, and through the use of agreements, they reduced the benefits of people who did not cooperate. The reform also imposed limits on the granting of benefits.
