In this scandal, Bill Clinton, during his presidency, cheated on his wife with a young White House intern. After this was leaked to the public, Bill Clinton maintained his innocence and even went so far as to broadcast his promise on national television. However, thanks to Linda Tripp, a friend of Lewinski's, it was proven that Clinton had indeed committed sexual acts with Lewinski, and this revelation led to an impeachment trial against Clinton for perjury. Although Clinton was never convicted or removed from office, the scandal nevertheless left a new generation frustrated with government due to the actions of one individual, and reminded another generation of the Nixon debacle that occurred only 25 years ago (Foner 1095). For Clinton, this public embarrassment would continue to haunt him for years and harm his party as the 42nd president would become the second president (the other also a Democrat) to undergo impeachment proceedings..
