  • Essay / Friendship in the Epic of Gilgamesh - 832

Throughout the Epic of Gilgamesh, I discovered the importance of friendships. People will always come in and out of your life, but it's the true friendships that last. Friendships are present in happy times, but are more important in difficult times. These are the people who build friendships. As with Gilgamesh and Enkidu, it seems people will only find one person who is meant to be their better half. Although Gilgamesh and Enkidu's friendship took place a long time ago, it can still be compared to modern-day friendships. Before Enkidu came, Gilgamesh was a man of great power, a being for whom there was no equal. Gilgamesh boasted of his overwhelming glory and power, but his arrogance was accompanied by considerable abuse of power, which drove the city of Uruk into a state of rage. Yet Gilgamesh felt no despair; he lived to show his majestic power to others. From the beginning, a powerful bond developed between man and woman. The people of Uruk were tired of Gilgamesh's arrogance and cruelty. They cried out to the gods who then called upon higher gods like the creator goddess Aruru. They asked him to “create his (Gilgamesh) equal; that he resembles him as much as his own reflection, his second self, stormy heart for stormy heart. Let them fight together and leave Uruk alone” (Gilgamesh 13). The wise Ninsun, the mother of Gilgamesh, said to him: “You will love him as a woman and he will never abandon you.” Gilgamesh had finally met his partner, a friend who would serve as his companion for life. The gods created Enkidu, half man and half beast, to be the other half of Gilgamesh. Strengthened by the seal of this great friendship, Gilgamesh began to change his selfish habits. Nevertheless, he shared with En...... middle of paper ...... If it was when Gilgamesh was about to show mercy to Humbaba, Enkidu convinced Gilgamesh to kill the giant anyway. This event actually sealed Enkidu's death. Another important factor in their friendship was that they helped each other claim glory and leave a legacy. They achieved this by killing the giant Humbaba and defeating the Bull of Heaven. In the end, they stayed together despite everything. Throughout history there have been many friendships, but true friendships last through time. Gilgamesh and Enkidu are an example of true friendship when it comes to their loyalty and care. The two friends were ready to do anything for each other. The two men, equally strong, felt the need to unite their strengths and weaknesses, as well as their courage and their fear. They grew up together emotionally and physically, forming a perfect team.
